Track Dissection aims to capture the essence of an artist’s song: the effort behind it, the context surrounding it, and the emotions etched within it. In each piece, the artist pulls back the curtain of their work, revealing its intimacies.
The melody for the chorus interrupted my train of thought when I was driving down the highway in January of last year. The melody kept getting stuck in my head so I made the initial demo for this song. I had a few synths and claps floating around which are still in the final version. I liked the ‘weirdness’ and directness of it. When I say I like the directness I’m talking about how straightforward it is lyrically.
At the time of making this song I was listening to the album Parade by Prince non stop and was in the heat of being super inspired by him and his collaborators, especially Wendy and Lisa. I love that album a lot. It inspires me to make music.
One of my favourite parts about this song is the bridge. When I took the initial version of the song to my collaborator, Thorington, he helped me carve out the rest of it. He has an incredibly innate sense of what to add musically. One of my favourite parts are the synths he added to the bridge. So magical! I also really really love the piano parts he added.
With the visuals for this song, I knew that I wanted to have it be outside and in nature. We shot the video at one of my favorite parks that has the most humongous trees that branch over you and create this beautiful oasis.
I actually tried to film some test shots in nature at first but I felt like something was missing. I created spirals at the end of my hair, spread out my fringe and added the eyelid makeup because I wanted to make it interesting and feel inspiring. I’m enjoying creating this world for my first album.
Lyrics
I wanna be the only contact on your burner phone
This lyric was inspired by someone who told me they had a burner phone with only a couple of phone numbers on it. I liked the idea of being one of the only contacts on someone’s burner phone. It means that if someone wants to escape all the noise from the world, that someone still wants to hear from a couple of people. Which is really special.
